Wiard Quartet

This is my Wiard Quartet: the modern jazz quartet through which I perform my original compositions. In my music, melody and groove are at the center, with enough room to leave some air in the phrasing and let the moment decide where the music goes. Interplay, dynamics, and rhythm are at the core of it all. I want it to feel like we’re telling one story together — each with our own voice, but completely connected.

Alongside me on piano, the quartet consists of:

• Haaije Bergstra – guitar
  Haaije has a clear, modern sound and a strong sense of harmony. He can make things feel wide open, but also add exactly the right color when the music calls for it.

• Jochem Janssen – drums
  Jochem is an incredibly responsive drummer. He doesn’t just lay down the foundation — he actively shapes the energy and detail of the music, moving effortlessly from tight grooves to more open, free-flowing moments.

• Dax van Krimpen – bass
  Dax keeps the foundation solid while bringing a melodic and interactive approach to the bass. Because of that, the bass never feels like just the low end, but truly part of the conversation within the band.

With this lineup, we perform new original compositions: music built around strong melodic ideas, rhythmic variation, and enough openness to make every performance different. Sometimes compact and direct, sometimes wide and cinematic — but always driven by the idea that interplay is the most important instrument in the band.
